Wollongong Hospital's Battle with Pigeons and Mould: A Wet Weather Woe (2026)

The Wollongong Hospital has been grappling with a series of health and safety concerns, including mold growth and pigeon infestations, which have been linked to the region's wet weather. The older persons' mental health unit, in particular, faced severe issues with pigeons and bird lice, while mold was found in various areas, including the intensive care unit ward, office, sprinklers, ceilings, and bathroom floors. These problems were not limited to Wollongong; Shellharbour Hospital also experienced ceiling tile collapses due to heavy rain. However, the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District has assured the public that all these issues have been addressed and repaired. The district spokesperson attributed the problems to severe weather conditions, which caused damage to the hospital's roof and led to bird infestations. An extensive remediation program, involving pest control experts and supported by the NSW Police, was initiated to tackle these issues. While some areas were temporarily closed for repairs, patient care was not affected. Mold and water leaks in the ICU and renal unit were also promptly addressed. The district emphasized their commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and patient safety, ensuring that any detected mold is reported, assessed, and treated swiftly to guarantee a safe environment for patients and staff.
