Imagine embarking on a romantic getaway, only to have it end in unimaginable tragedy. This is the heartbreaking story of a married couple whose lives were cut short in a picturesque yet perilous location—a story that raises questions about safety and fate. In January 2023, Rachael Patching, 33, and her wife Helen, 52, set out on a New Year’s adventure to the Brecon Beacons in South Wales, a region famously known as ‘Waterfall Country.’ This experienced and adventurous couple, who had been married for seven years, traveled 200 miles from their home in Sevenoaks, Kent, seeking a tranquil escape. Yet, their journey took a devastating turn when they went missing during the rugged Four Waterfalls Walk. The alarm was raised when a fellow hiker spotted a body in the water, leading to the discovery of their car in a nearby parking lot and a rucksack with walking poles at the water’s edge. Helen’s body was found by a kayaker on January 5, and Rachael’s was discovered three days later on the bank of a river near Glynneath. A post-mortem confirmed that both had drowned.
And this is the part most people miss: Just one year later, in June 2024, Corey Longdon, 26, met a similarly tragic fate in the same area. Corey, who was on a camping trip with his aunt Lisa Lane, fell 100ft from a cliff known as Precipice Walk while reportedly looking for a shortcut. His aunt described hearing a ‘loud splash’ and a stranger’s cries for help. Despite being rushed to the trauma unit at University Hospital of Wales, Corey could not be saved. His cause of death was severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy following a fall leading to traumatic cardiac arrest.
Both Rachael and Helen were described by their families as ‘experienced and safe hikers’ with a deep love for the outdoors. Helen, a former senior probation officer, had completed ultra-challenges, while Rachael, who worked for the IOPC and Battersea Dogs Home, was said to be ‘happiest when walking up mountains and traveling to remote places.’ Their families remembered them as the ‘life and souls of their families’ and a ‘perfect match.’
But here’s the controversial question: Could these tragedies have been prevented? Coroner Rachel Knight has pledged to investigate the safety of the paths and waterfalls in the area, potentially issuing a Prevention of Future Deaths report.
