Southeast Michigan Power Outages: High Winds Cause Widespread Blackouts (2026)

Thousands in Michigan Face Power Outages, With More Expected

A weather crisis is unfolding in Southeast Michigan, leaving thousands in the dark. As of Monday afternoon, over 9,000 customers of DTE Energy have lost power, and the situation is far from over.

The culprit? A recent ice storm, which coated the region with up to 0.35 inches of ice, followed by rain. This deadly combination has left trees and branches vulnerable, and with wind gusts reaching 60 mph, the risk of falling trees and limbs damaging power lines is extremely high.

But here's where it gets controversial: DTE is warning residents to brace for more outages, potentially leaving many without power for days.

"We're expecting a challenging situation," said Bill Hutchinson, a DTE Electric director. "Our priority is our customers, and we understand the hardships caused by power outages." Hutchinson added that they anticipate a rise in outages as the day progresses.

DTE's crews are working tirelessly, with over 1,000 employees and contractors on the ground, assisted by 900 additional workers from across the nation. They are tackling public safety hazards and critical facilities first, then moving on to widespread outages. However, the weather may not be on their side.

High winds are making restoration efforts treacherous. Climbing poles or using bucket trucks becomes a risky endeavor, potentially halting work until conditions become safer. This means some residents may experience intermittent outages as crews work to restore power safely.

And this is the part most people miss: If the winds don't subside, some customers could be without power until Wednesday, extending the hardship for many.

DTE is urging residents to stay safe, keeping a distance of at least 25 feet from downed power lines, as they could be live and dangerous. Any hazardous situations should be reported immediately through the DTE app, online, or by phone.

As the situation evolves, residents are left wondering: Will the winds cooperate, or will the outages persist? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—the impact of this weather event is far from over.
