I've always been a firm believer in the power of a good breakfast, but on the trail, my usual routine takes a backseat. This particular journey began with a delightful breakfast at the White Mountain Bookstore and Cafe, a welcome change from my usual McDonald's habit, which I owe to my vegan hiking partner, Always.
After a quick town run, we embarked on the Carter Mountain stretch, a challenging fifteen-mile trek. The day's heat and the anticipation of the climb ahead made me crave a refreshing Pepsi, which led to an unexpected encounter with a trail angel named Claudia and her loyal companion, a Golden Retriever.
Claudia's trail angel ministry and her insights into the local hostels added an interesting layer to our journey. As we climbed, the trail followed the sparkling Nineteen Mile Brook, leading us to a refreshing dip in a small reservoir. It was a moment of cool respite before the real challenge began - an all-fours climb up boulders and slanted rock.
Reaching the top, we were rewarded with a breathtaking view, but the descent was no less daunting. It was a treacherous trek, made even more challenging by the need to navigate steep slabs and cling to trees and roots.
At the Imp Shelter, we made an unconventional camping arrangement, with me opting for a cowboy camp next to Always. The night's activities included a lively book recommendation session with the caretaker, a true bookworm.
As the day turned to night, I struggled to find the perfect sleeping spot, feeling exposed under the stars. My early morning wake-up call led to a quick oatmeal breakfast, a far cry from my usual indulgent breakfasts. Always, true to his word, skipped breakfast and hit the trail, leaving me to my own devices.
A few days later, a text from Always brought back memories of our journey, including a hike to the Mt. Washington summit. It was a reminder of the beauty and challenges we faced on the trail.
This experience taught me that sometimes, the most memorable moments on a journey are the unexpected encounters and the unique challenges we overcome. It's a reminder to embrace the unexpected and find joy in the little things, even if it means skipping breakfast.
