A bold move to secure Nigeria's energy future: Customs and NMDPRA unite against fuel diversion!
In a powerful collaboration, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have joined forces to tackle a critical issue - the diversion of petroleum products meant for domestic use. This partnership, highlighted in a recent meeting, aims to safeguard Nigeria's energy security and ensure a stable supply chain.
But here's where it gets controversial...
During the engagement, Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the importance of interagency cooperation. He noted that their joint efforts, particularly through Operation Whirlwind, have yielded measurable results in curbing fuel diversion. Adeniyi highlighted the model of intelligence sharing and coordinated field operations, which has been a key driver of success.
The NCS is fully committed to supporting the ongoing reforms in the petroleum regulatory space. Adeniyi stated, "We will continue to provide technical expertise and operational feedback to implement new guidelines and ensure a smooth transition as Nigeria moves towards becoming a net exporter of petroleum products."
And this is the part most people miss...
The Executive Director of NMDPRA, Ogbugo Ukoha, highlighted the long-standing and productive relationship between the two agencies. He explained that Operation Whirlwind, a collaborative effort, has been instrumental in reducing cross-border diversion. Ukoha also mentioned the removal of fuel subsidy, which has significantly deterred smuggling activities.
"Our goal is to maintain progress and ensure that petroleum exports are regulated effectively while mitigating energy security risks. We are working closely with Customs to achieve this delicate balance," Ukoha added.
This partnership is a crucial step towards securing Nigeria's energy future. By combining their expertise and resources, NCS and NMDPRA are taking a stand against fuel diversion and ensuring a stable and transparent system for all stakeholders.
