This time, the finger-pointing comes from Connor Zilisch, whose promising run at COTA took a dramatic turn after an unfortunate incident with Day. Zilisch, who had been a strong contender in Stage 1, was left fuming after late contact with Day sent him spinning off the track, potentially costing him a top-five finish.
In a post-race interview, Zilisch didn't hold back, calling Day a "hack" and demanding an apology. But here's where it gets controversial... Day, in his defense, acknowledged the mistake and took responsibility. He explained that a mechanical issue with his car had caused him to lose control, leading to the unfortunate collision.
"I understand his frustration," Day said in an interview with The CW. "When he crossed my path, I lost what little grip I had left, and his car's airflow affected mine. It wasn't intentional, and I certainly didn't want to cause a wreck. I'll take full ownership of my mistake, whether it was due to a broken race car or not. I'm willing to apologize and clear the air."
With just a few laps remaining in the Focused Health 250 at COTA, the incident left Zilisch's No. 1 JRM Chevy in a spin. Day attempted to explain the mechanics of the situation, stating that a part under the front end of his car had come loose, causing him to lose control and struggle with turning.
"It was a difficult situation in any high-speed corner," Day explained. "The splitter wasn't close to the ground, and I was really nose-up, fighting for turn."
This isn't the first time Day has found himself in the midst of controversy. Previously, Freddie Kraft had warned Day about earning a reputation similar to Carson Hocevar, known for his aggressive driving style.
