Measles Cases Surge in the Americas: What You Need to Know (2026)

Measles Outbreak: A Growing Concern in the Americas

The Americas are facing a concerning resurgence of measles, with a sharp increase in cases reported across the region. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), a United Nations agency, has issued an epidemiological alert, urging member states to take immediate action to combat the spread of this highly contagious virus.

In the first three weeks of 2026 alone, PAHO documented a staggering 1,031 cases of measles, a significant rise from the 14,891 cases reported throughout 2025. The organization's alert emphasizes the need for enhanced surveillance and vaccination efforts to prevent further transmission.

The outbreak is particularly concerning in North America, with the United States, Mexico, and Canada experiencing high numbers of cases. In the US, 171 new cases were reported in the first three weeks of 2026, bringing the total to 2,242 for the year. South Carolina has seen a significant outbreak, with 876 cases, and Texas reported 762 cases between January and August.

Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus that can infect nine out of every ten unvaccinated individuals. While most symptoms resolve within weeks, the disease can be deadly or cause severe health complications, especially in young children. Ear infections, lung inflammation, pneumonia, and encephalitis are potential complications.

The only effective prevention is vaccination, typically administered through the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. Health experts recommend early vaccination, with the first dose before 15 months and the second before age six. Despite its safety, vaccination rates have declined in some regions due to misinformation and conspiracy theories.

In the US, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made controversial claims about the vaccine's longevity and potential health risks. However, experts from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America emphasize that the MMR vaccine is safe and far more effective than contracting measles.

The Americas region was declared measles-free in 2016, but both the US and Mexico risk losing their elimination status due to ongoing outbreaks. Mexico reported 6,428 cases in 2025, the highest in the region, and has seen 740 additional cases in the first three weeks of 2026. Canada also lost its measles-free status in November 2025 and has experienced outbreaks since October 2024.

To regain elimination status, countries must halt measles transmission for over a year. PAHO will review the situation in the US and Mexico on April 13, 2026, and the organization is closely monitoring the region's response to the outbreak.
