A thrilling overtime victory for the Utah Mammoth!
The Utah Mammoth's Comeback Story
In a nail-biting NHL encounter on Sunday, December 14, 2025, the Utah Mammoth staged an incredible comeback against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Down by three goals entering the final period, the Mammoth fought back with a relentless display of skill and determination.
Dylan Guenther, the hero of the night, scored the game-winning goal just 42 seconds into overtime. Guenther, who has been on a hot streak with five goals in his last four games, beat Sergei Murashov with a precise wrist shot from the slot. This victory marked the Mammoth's second consecutive win after a brief three-game losing streak.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Michael Carcone, Nate Schmidt, and Sean Durzi all contributed to the Mammoth's comeback, with Carcone scoring twice. The Mammoth briefly took the lead in the third period, 4-3, after trailing 3-0. However, Pittsburgh's Justin Brazeau and Bryan Rust kept the Penguins in the game with their own impressive performances.
And this is the part most people miss...
The Penguins, despite earning a point in nine of their last eleven games, have lost their last five straight. Their struggles in overtime have been a recurring theme, as they blew a 5-1 lead against San Jose the day before and lost to Anaheim earlier in the week after a last-second overtime goal from the Ducks.
Utah's comeback was swift, erasing a three-goal deficit in just six minutes. Schmidt's rebound goal at 1:07 of the third period sparked the rally, followed by Carcone's clever rebound off Murashov's back at 1:22. Durzi tied the game at 5:35, and when Pittsburgh's challenge for goaltender interference was denied, Carcone gave the Mammoth the lead with a power-play goal.
Brazeau tied the game again at 14:06, setting the stage for Guenther's overtime heroics.
Pittsburgh played without goaltender Stuart Skinner and defenseman Brett Kulak, who were acquired in a trade with Edmonton on Friday. Skinner and Kulak were granted non-roster status to navigate immigration processes.
Up next, the Mammoth continue their three-game road trip in Boston on Tuesday, while the Penguins close out their five-game homestand against Edmonton.
Will the Penguins break their losing streak, or will the Mammoth continue their impressive comeback story? Let's discuss in the comments! Is there a turning point in the season for these teams?
