Bayern Munich and Mainz played to a 2-2 draw, allowing the Bundesliga leaders to extend their advantage at the summit. A late equaliser kept Bayern nine points ahead, despite Mainz's stubborn resilience.
Lennart Karl, still a youngster, opened the scoring in the 29th minute by tapping in from close range after a well-placed move.
Just before the break, Kacper Potulski headed home from a free-kick delivered by William Boving, pulling Mainz level in an unlikely comeback act.
The visitors then stunned Bayern in the 67th minute when Stefan Bell lofted a precise through ball to Jae-sung Lee, whose perfectly timed header found the bottom corner as Manuel Neuer was left watching.
With only three minutes of regulation time remaining, a foul on Harry Kane inside the box by Potulski earned Bayern a penalty, which Kane converted to rescue a point for the hosts.
Kane, the England captain, continues to lead the league’s scoring charts with 18 goals this season, and this strike marked his 80th Bundesliga goal.
Next up, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern travel to Heidenheim for their next fixture on Sunday at 16:30 GMT.
