In a quaint Syrian village characterized by its modest brick homes and agricultural landscapes, residents are brimming with pride.
Al Nayrab, located in northwestern Syria, is the birthplace of Ahmed Al Ahmed, the man hailed as a hero for his courageous actions during a recent terrorist incident at Bondi, where he successfully disarmed one of the attackers, sustaining injuries in the process.
Currently, the 43-year-old is receiving medical care in a Sydney hospital, undergoing surgeries to treat multiple gunshot wounds sustained during the ordeal. His family back in Al Nayrab has been following updates about him through social media, deeply moved by the widespread public support and recognition of his bravery.
"Ahmed is a courageous and honorable individual. He cannot stand idly by in the face of injustice or corruption. He vehemently opposes wrongdoing and cruelty," shared his uncle, Wahid Al Ahmed, during an interview with the ABC.
"When he witnessed the horrific scene around him, with people—fellow human beings—lying helplessly on the ground, he could not turn away.
As is typical of many Arabs and Syrians, they carry a profound sense of dignity and honor, holding disdain for disgrace and betrayal."
Al Nayrab, home to approximately 6,500 residents, lies in proximity to Idlib city, which once served as the stronghold for the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, known for its role in opposing the Assad regime during the prolonged civil conflict in Syria.
The villagers predominantly work in construction or operate small farms, cultivating olives and grains while raising sheep and cattle, reflecting a humble yet resilient lifestyle.
Reflecting on Ahmed Al Ahmed's journey, his family revealed that he departed Al Nayrab in the mid-2000s to seek better opportunities in Australia while pursuing his studies.
"Ahmed was a dedicated student," Wahid reminisced. "However, circumstances compelled him to leave his homeland in search of employment. After a year or two in school, he seized the opportunity to travel abroad solely to work and support himself."
Wahid also mentioned that prior to his departure, Ahmed had served in the Syrian military, which equipped him with the skills necessary to handle firearms effectively.
"He received formal training, was physically robust, and possessed an abundance of energy, enthusiasm, and determination," he explained.
Abed el Rahman el Mohamad, a fellow villager, spoke fondly of Ahmed, recalling, "I know him personally. He is a son of our village. Ever since childhood, Ahmed has exhibited quick wit, resilience, and chivalry in every aspect of his character."
During the tumultuous period of 2020, Al Nayrab found itself on the front lines of Syria’s civil war, facing relentless bombardments from both the Syrian government forces and the Russian Air Force. The devastation left many buildings in ruins, with their owners unable to finance the necessary repairs and rebuilding efforts.
Abed expressed the collective pride felt by the townsfolk regarding Ahmed Al Ahmed’s heroic deed.
"As residents of Al Nayrab, we, especially, take immense pride in his actions that saved numerous innocent lives who were on the brink of losing everything during that terrorist attack," he stated. "We feel a deep sense of honor connected to Ahmed’s act of valor."
Ahmed Al Ahmed has emerged as a prominent figure across the Arab world, inspiring many with his display of bravery and compassion that transcends religious and political boundaries. In a region beleaguered by conflict and instability, his actions serve as a glimmer of hope.
"What Ahmed accomplished brings immense pride not only to us as Arabs but also to Islam and the entire Muslim community, given that he undertook a brave act that preserved lives without regard to their faith—be it Christian, Muslim, or otherwise," his uncle, Mohammad Al Ahmed, remarked proudly.
"It was a purely humanitarian gesture, and we take great pride in this, representing our dignity, Syria’s honor, and the Arab nation as a whole."
