A bold move by the Ghana Armed Forces has sparked controversy and left many questioning the future of Bawku. The removal of Alhaji Seidu Abagre from his position as Bawku Naba has divided opinions and ignited a debate over traditional leadership.
On December 24, 2025, a significant operation took place, following the presentation of a mediation report by the esteemed Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This report, submitted to President John Dramani Mahama earlier in the month, aimed to address the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in Bawku.
The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntanka Mohammed-Mubarak, issued a statement on Christmas Eve, confirming that Alhaji Abagre was safely in the custody of state security agencies. This removal was a direct result of the mediation report's findings, which concluded that Abagre's enskinment as Bawku Naba posed security risks at both national and international levels.
The report recommended that Abagre be recalled to Nalerigu by the Nayiri to assume a different traditional role. Alternatively, it suggested he remain in Bawku as a private citizen, relinquishing his claim to the title. This decision recognized Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the legitimate Bawku Naaba, in accordance with the 1992 Constitution.
The government accepted these recommendations and announced a plan to support Alhaji Abagre's safe relocation to Nalerigu. Additionally, President Mahama directed the establishment of a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund to restore stability to the region. However, this move occurred amidst rising security tensions, with the Inspector-General of Police deploying additional forces to Nalerigu and nearby areas after threats of further attacks.
Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak had previously renewed curfew hours for the Bawku Municipality, requiring residents to stay indoors from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, effective November 24, 2025.
And here's where it gets controversial: Some argue that this decision undermines traditional leadership and sets a precedent for state intervention in such matters. Others believe it is a necessary step to ensure peace and stability in the region. What are your thoughts on this complex issue?
